Pixels Expands with New Games and Exciting Collaborations

Pixels has been one of the most popular crypto games of the year, with its late 2023 migration to the Ethereum gaming network Ronin and the token launch in February propelling this social farming game to the forefront, attracting millions of players. 

Now, the developers are venturing into creating additional games within the same universe.

In a recent interview about the Pixels Chapter 2 gameplay launch, founder Luke Barwikowski revealed to Decrypt’s GG that the studio is working on new games within the Pixels universe and is collaborating with external developers to expand the franchise. 

Barwikowski mentioned that his internal team, consisting of about 19 full-time employees, sets the high-level direction for these games and then hands them off to external studios for development. 

His team will then integrate blockchain elements and user acquisition strategies before releasing the games to the public. “There’s some fun stuff coming,” he teased, hinting at the possibility of a Telegram-based game as well. 

“We're considering launching another game on Telegram,” he said. “That's just a side experiment for now, but Telegram’s ecosystem is intriguing, and we might explore it.”

What's Next for Telegram's Gaming Ecosystem?

Telegram’s crypto gaming ecosystem has experienced significant growth recently, with the tap-to-earn game Notcoin attracting 35 million players this spring and launching the year's largest gaming token via The Open Network. 

Hamster Kombat has since amassed an even larger audience, reportedly over 200 million players, to the extent that Iranian officials were concerned it might distract citizens from voting in the presidential election last week. Other popular Telegram games include Yescoin, Catizen, TapSwap, and PixelTap.

Whether or not the potential Telegram iteration of Pixels materializes, Barwikowski is enthusiastic about expanding the intellectual property (IP) they’ve developed. With Pixels' growing player base and larger in-house team, they are currently creating an in-house lore bible to guide future apps and experiments. “This will lay the foundation for our IP expansion experiments,” he explained. 

“We're working on several mobile apps, which will be our next distribution channel. We plan to experiment with incentivized downloads, implementing a play-to-earn model on iOS and Android.”

Alongside the IP expansion, the recent Chapter 2 update to Pixels aims to demonstrate that a play-to-earn crypto game model can be sustainable and successful in 2024. “We want to be the leading play-to-earn company, and this initiative is a step towards that goal,” Barwikowski affirmed.
